08 Oct David’s Company was struggling. Then God Spoke about an unusual Strategy.
David was working as a senior manager in a multi-national logistics company. But the company was not doing well. Productivity was poor and morale was low.
The solution posed by the leadership of the company was to push employees harder. They obviously weren’t working hard enough.
Now the pressure was on for David. He was in charge of managing 300 employees in his shift and had fourteen direct reports. Caught between the executive leadership, the union and the employees, work became a dread for David. One morning he sat in the carpark crying out to God, “I hate this. Get me out of here!”
David’s God Conversation
Then the Holy Spirit spoke, “David, I’m trying to show my glory and you’re telling me to get you out of here? I have a kingdom answer for this!”
God’s answer was an unusual strategy. At the end of the shift when the employees clocked off, David was to stand at the exit and thank each of them for their work.
Thank all of the 300 employees? That would take a long time!
Out of desperation, David obeyed. He stood at the exit door at the end of the shift and thanked each employee one by one; “Thank you Bob. Thank you Jerry. Thank you Bill…” At first, the employees were annoyed. They suspected David was spying on them to ensure they stayed till the end of their shift. Later, they concluded David was weird.
But David kept doing what God said… “Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
A few days into the process, David’s manager came to speak with him: “I’ve been hearing you’ve been thanking everyone. You know, we pay these people to work! You don’t have to thank them.”
And yet David continued to do what God had said…
God’s Kingdom Ways
Within thirty days, David’s shift became the best performing team in the company. Their results were so outstanding that the human relations team at the company interviewed David to discover his strategy. What was he doing to produce such outstanding results? No other manager had achieved such a high level of performance. David was even later asked to write the induction manual for all the new managers!
And yet, we shouldn’t be surprised.
David’s God conversation reveals the beauty of God’s kingdom ways. God’s ways are inherently different to ours. When Jesus came, we saw that God always placed people above profit, and love for others above ourselves. Then God sent the Spirit to continue the process, reminding us of God’s ways in Jesus and showing us how to put them into practice in our own situations. When we listen to his Spirit and do what the Spirit says, we will see God’s kingdom come in our own lives. And where God’s kingdom comes, people will always flourish.
