17 Jul In the Midst of Depression, God told Sarah to Change her Ringtone

Sarah was suffering from depression and hopelessness to the point of contemplating suicide. Then she heard God speak to her in the middle of the night. An internal voice said, “Change the ringtone on your phone.”

The song Sarah had set on her phone celebrated laziness and passivity. Sarah thought it was funny – she’d always thought of herself as a lazy person. 

Sarah knew that the voice in the night was God, so she did what God said. She changed her ringtone to a different song. 

The action marked a shift in her life. As time went on, she began to experience more of God’s love and her thoughts began to reflect the heart of God. 

Changing a ringtone is such a simple thing. But this is how God works. When we make a decision to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives and speaks to us to further the ministry of Jesus (John 14:26; 16:13). God’s voice activates change from the inside out. In Sarah’s case, the Holy Spirit’s instruction reflected the teachings of Jesus who taught us the importance of the thoughts of our mind and heart (Luke 6:45).

The Holy Spirit is a masterful strategist and knows just what we need to bring transformation. The pathway will look different for each of us – Holy Spirit speaks to one about forgiving their father, to another about giving something away and another, about changing their ringtone on their phone. But irrespective of the specifics, the Holy Spirit’s goal remains – to continue the mission of Jesus and lead us into the abundant life he came to bring (John 10:10). 

All we need to do is listen and follow.
